•The memory effect exists in the spin-chain single crystal Ca3Co1.62Mn0.38O6.•The memory effect in Ca3Co1.62Mn0.38O6 is associated with chemical disorder and competing interactions.•The observed memory effect can be described by the phenomenological hierarchical model.
