Salinity stress effects on direct and indirect defence metabolites in maize

•Salt-stressed and healthy maize plants differed in their defence responses to herbivory.•Increased salt levels induced ROS and 1,4-benzoxazin-3-ones aglycones but not plant volatiles.•Salt-stressed maize emitted less herbivore-induced volatiles per plant but not per unit biomass.
