Does the novel fast-GC coupled with PTR-TOF-MS allow a significant advancement in detecting VOC emissions from plants?

•We compared a traditional GC–MS system with a novel fast-GC coupled with a PTR-TOF.•We measured VOCs at different T on 2 tree species comparing the 3 techniques.•The fast-GC module provided important information about some isobaric compounds.•We showed the potential and limitations of the fast-GC to study biogenic emissions.
