A novel approach of integrating ventilation and air cleaning for sustainable and healthy office environments

•A dynamic ventilation strategy integrated with air cleaning was proposed and tested.•A whole building simulation on the new approach was performed for IAQ/energy analyses.•ASHRAE 62.1 might be insufficient to meet the imposed IAQ exposure constraints for HCHO.•The dynamic ventilation showed promising outcomes, enhancing energy/cost savings and IAQ.•For polluted outdoor air, the strategy has high potential in the combined IAQ-energy benefit.
