Control algorithms for dynamic windows for residential buildings

•Five control algorithms for dynamic windows with different input data were compared.•Simple and complex shading control strategies were developed.•Two window configurations and four different climates were analyzed.•Final and primary energy reduction, as well as maximization of time with shade up can be achieved.•Automatic shade operation performs much better than manual operation.
