•Somatostatin analogues (SSA) are the treatment for growth hormone (GH) tumors.•Histological subtyping of GH tumors (DG and SG) may predict response to SSA.•We examined the expression of somatostatin receptors in GH tumor subtypes.•SSTR2 levels were significantly higher in DG compared to SG tumors.•Downstream of SSTR2 p27kip1 was decreased in SG compared to DG tumors.
