•Conjugation of ZnCdTe nanocrystals to Concanavalin A created cluster-like motif.•Increasing amounts of protein decreased semiconductor photoluminescence.•Quenching was only partial and protein remains active.•Excitation profile of Concanavalin A changes with conjugation.
