Vitamin D reduces LPS-induced cytokine release in omental adipose tissue of women but not men

•Human adipose tissue explants were incubated for 48h with two forms of vitamin D.•Changes in cytokine release (TNF-α, IL-6) were examined.•In women, vitamin D lowered cytokine release from omental adipose tissue explants.•In men, both forms of vitamin D had no effect on adipose tissue explants.•Apart from sex, no other factors correlated with the response to vitamin D.
