•Hyperinsulinemia does not downregulate hepatic SHBG production in obesity.•Proinflammatory cytokines and hepatic steatosis downregulate SHBG in obesity.•Monosaccharides and palmitate downregulate and oleate upregulates hepatic SHBG.•Plasma SHBG could be a biomarker of the degree of inflammation in metabolic disorders.
