•Low-intensity farming landscapes have persisted in parts of Eastern Europe.•In Southern Transylvania, plant species composition differed between land use types.•The arable mosaic contained over 350 plant species, or 63% of species observed.•Conservation strategies need to consider entire landscapes, including arable land.
