摘要

•Average total carbon was 117±47Mgha−1, with 42% in fresh aboveground biomass.•Cocoa trees store 18% of carbon in the aboveground biomass while other trees store 65%.•The rate of carbon accumulation in aboveground biomass was 1.3–2.6MgCha−1y−1.•Trade-offs between carbon levels and yields allow designing win–win cocoa-based AFS.•Carbon assessment helps associations improving farmers’ income from ecological service.
