•DCD stability in slurry and field gas emissions post application were studied.•DCD did not degrade in anaerobic dairy slurry over six months of incubation.•DCD encapsulated in a xerogel of chitosan was slowly released in slurry.•DCD-amended slurry significantly reduced N2O emissions after landspreading.
