•An ESBMV-SCBP beamformer was proposed for ultrasound plane-wave imaging.•The design of the SCBP considers the subarray technique, which is essential.•The ESBMV-SCBP showed effectiveness in improving the imaging quality.•Only a small extra computational cost was needed for the proposed method.
