Molecular breeding for introgression of fatty acid desaturase mutant alleles (ahFAD2A and ahFAD2B) enhances oil quality in high and low oil containing peanut genotypes

•Two molecular breeding approaches namely MABC and MAS were used to enhance oil quality in peanut.•Developed high oleate introgression lines; 27 with high and 28 with low oil content.•All the selected introgression lines had low linoleic and palmitic acid content.•No negative association between high oil content and high oleic acid.•Oleic acid increased by 0.5–1.1 folds at par with the donor parent, SunOleic 95R.
