Domestic bioethanol-fireplaces-a new source of severe burn accidents.

•All burn intensive care patients between 2000 and 2014 were studied.•12 patients with a bioethanol associated burn injury were identified.•The burn severity of these patients compared to the average of all patients was similar.•The outcome was worse compared to other accelerant related burns.•Bioethanol-fueled decorative fireplaces are dangerous even by intended use.
