•The rs2910164 CC genotype in miR-146a was an risk factor to vulnerable plaque in T2DM patients.•The risk of vulnerable plaque of CC genotype was confined to special populations.•The p300 rs20551 polymorphism may not be a risk factor to develop atherosclerosis.
