Temperate Drosophila preserve cardiac function at low temperature.

•We measured the effect of temperature on heart rate in five Drosophila species.•The heart continues to beat at temperatures below those that cause chill coma.•Species’ cardiac thermal performance was tightly correlated to their cold tolerance.•Reduced central nervous input altered the thermal sensitivity of heart rate.
