•We identified impaired intrauterine growth of foetuses in women with epilepsy.•Significantly higher risk of low ponderal index and small for gestational age (SGA).•Exposure to anti epileptic drugs increased the risk of SGA.•SGA and low ponderal index was most frequent in Lamictal exposed infants.
