•The epidemiology of group A streptococci (GAS) is reviewed, highlighting emm genes.•The genetic organization and population biology of GAS is discussed.•The core and non-core genomes of 24 GAS isolates are evaluated, including prophage.•Genes acquired by GAS genomes from related species are summarized.•Genome changes underlying long- and short-term evolution of GAS are delineated.
