•When listeners recognize spoken words, similar sounding words inhibit each other.•Sleep was thought to be essential for the acquisition of these inhibitory links.•We report inter-lexical inhibition after 20min of training and without sleep.•Knowledge of a word sound and its links to other words might emerge simultaneously.
