•Stressful work conditions and self-care are examined in their link to clergy obesity.•Clergy with higher levels of stress are more likely to be obese.•Bi-vocational clergy or those who work more hours are more likely to be obese.•Days off, support groups, and sabbaticals are associated with lower odds of obesity.•Self-care moderates the associations between stress and obesity for Protestants.
