•An increased falling frequency and a decreased bone quality contribute to the increased fracture risk in T2DM patients.•DXA and FRAX® can be used to assess fracture risk in T2DM patients, but they both underestimate the absolute fracture risk.•HR-pQCT is a promising new imaging modality.
