•pH-responsive liposomes were obtained by decoration with stearoyl-PEG-polySDM.•Liposomes respond to the acid pH of tumour matrix.•At acid pH liposome charge decreases which triggers their aggregation.•The pH response of liposomes induces their association with cancer cells.•Environmentally controlled delivery of gemcitabine to cancer cells was achieved.
