•Seven fullerenes were evaluated in terms of their cytotoxic effects on B-lymphomas.•Pyrrolidinium fullerene induced apoptosis of KSHV-infected B-lymphoma PEL cells.•The activation of Akt is essential for PEL cell survival.•Pyrrolidinium fullerene activated caspase-9 by inactivating Akt in PEL cells.•Pyrrolidinium fullerene have potential as novel drugs for the treatment of PEL.
