•Cylindrospermopsin (CYN) alters the growth of Vicia faba seedlings.•CYN induces necrosis, nuclear fragmentation and chromosomal breakage in roots.•The toxin induces transient stimulation of mitosis, but causes plant mitotic delay.•CYN delays de novo protein synthesis in roots of Sinapis alba.•CYN induces specifically alterations in PPB (preprophase band) development.
