•The most common zirconium-containing phase in Hanford zircaloy waste is a <2μm Na–Zr–Al–O amorphous phase.•Larger (5–50μm) sodium-bearing zirconium dioxide is also present.•The most prevalent fluoride-containing species is NaF in pure zircaloy waste.•The most prevalent fluoride-containing species is Na7F(PO4)2·19H2O in comingled waste.
