•We compared leukocytes in organs of CD24−/− vs. wildtype mice.•Highly decreased numbers of leukocytes in colons of CD24−/− mice were detected.•Lack of CD24 on epithelial and endothelial cells altered cellularity of the colon.•Leukoyte transfer confirmed a role of CD24 on non-hematopoietic cells.•Retention of leukocytes seems CD24-dependent in the colons.
