•Vitamin D plays an important role in the development of multiple sclerosis (MS).•Our study involves 1007 MS cases making the latest meta-analysis ever conducted.•MS patients had lower mean levels of 25(OH)D than healthy controls.•No obvious publication biases were observed in Funnel plots.
