Analysis of reading strategies in deaf adults as a function of their language and meta-phonological skills.

•We examine the reading mechanisms used by deaf adults.•Deaf participants used the key word strategy.•Vocabulary increases with reading level, but syntax did not.•Deaf participants had a fairly large orthographical lexicon.•Evidence indicating that deaf participants used phonological representations.
