•We examine the effect of food prices on youth percentage body fat (PBF).•This is the first study to estimate the effects of price on percentage body fat.•PBF falls as the real price per calorie of food for home consumption rises.•PBF also fall as the real price of fast-food restaurant food rises.•PBF rises as the real price of fruits and vegetables rises.
