•The reverse line blotting method for rotavirus G- and P-genotyping was successful in >95% of the clinical samples.•The complete reverse line blotting protocol takes 8h to completion with 3h hands-on-time.•A rotavirus genotyping method that is accurate, cheap and fast is presented.
