•An iflavirus was identified in the brown planthopper, Nilaparvata lugens.•The virus was excreted in honeydews of the infected insects.•Horizontal transmission of the virus was confirmed.•We propose the species name of the virus as Nilaparvata lugens honeydew virus-1.
