Cellular division is essential for the survival of the multicellular organisms which contain renewable tissues. However, cellular division also puts the organisms in danger to develop any types of cancers. Cellular senescence has emerged in part as a tumor suppressor mechanism. Here we discuss the function and regulation of the tumor suppressor proteins INK4a/ARF in connection with replicative senescence, cancer and aging.
