•Satisfaction with life and vitality are associated with mortality in midlife individuals.•Cognitive and health-related aspects of well-being are important in relation to mortality.•The associations are independent of sociodemographic, lifestyle, health and social factors.•Satisfaction with life and vitality show similar strengths of associations with mortality.
