A sugar fix for bone tumours?

The success of modern molecular biology has been radically enhanced by the ability to identify disease-related genes through positional cloning, helped by accumulating data generated by the Human Genome Project. Yet the strength of this power seems diminished when a newly discovered disease gene yields no immediate insight into the biology of the disease in question and remains a structure looking for a function.
