Effect Of Written Patient Information On Knowledge And Function Of Patients With Acute Uncomplicated Back Pain (Pik Study)

By means of an RCT involving 12 primary care practices the effect of a short evidence-based leaflet on knowledge, function and patients' beliefs was investigated in 174 patients with acute, uncomplicated back pain. Patients receiving the specific leaflet showed better knowledge at 1 week and greater improvement of function scores at 3 months (differences not significant). The effects shown in the rather small sample may be even more important due to their positive interaction.
