Seizure Classification

Advances in the diagnosis of epilepsy made it necessary to revise the seizure classification of the International League Against Epilepsy (ILAE), published in 1981.After years of discussion, the ILAE presented a new seizure classification in 2017, which also proceeds electroclinically, i. e. incorporates seizure semiology and findings of additional technical examinations. The concept of simple-focal/partial and complex-focal/partial seizures was abandoned and the emphasis was placed on the onset of seizures.On the other hand, there is a semiological seizure classification, which classifies epileptic seizures exclusively on the basis of seizure semiology and uses old terms such as auras. Both approaches for seizure classification are discussed.
