Using electrofluidic devices as hyper-elastic strain sensors: Experimental and theoretical analysis

•Hyper-elastic electrofluidic strain sensors were characterized.•Both analytical and numerical models were developed to predict the sensor’s response.•The effect of geometry and orientation on the sensor sensitivity were investigated.•Sensors showed a nonlinear behavior and high sensitivity for high strains (⩽250%).
