Wide area phasor measurements based disturbance monitoring for line trip event

To prevent succession of faults that may lead to blackouts and unstable system, fast and accurate detection of line trip events is critical. Existing algorithms are mainly depended on circuit breaker status report from supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) system, which operates at relatively low sample rate. The present paper concentrates on a nearly real-time wide-area line trip disturbance event monitoring approach based on synchrophasor measurements. The proposed algorithms are developed from coherence and correlation analysis of real-time synchrophasor data. The coherence analysis is used to detect line trip event. The correlation coefficients are the input of the K-means clustering to produce certain number of coherent groups. Event location estimation problem is formulated as finding the most likely group which has the largest initial swing. In addition, the analytical analysis of continuum model based simulation system in line trip disturbance condition is presented. The proposed line trip monitoring approach is demonstrated on continuum model based simulation system.
