Phantom based qualitative and quantitative evaluation of artifacts in MR images of metallic hip prostheses

•A grid phantom is proposed to evaluate artifacts in MRI of metallic hip prostheses.•The grid structure allows evaluation of both in-plane and through-plane artifacts.•Standard sequences and artifact suppressing techniques were evaluated on different prosthesis types.•View-angle tilting and SEMAC techniques were found superior to standard protocols.•We conclude that the phantom is well suited for optimization of clinical protocols.
