•Differential response of oral mucosal model to irritant and sensitizer compounds.•Shown irritants induce significant IL-1α in oral epithelial model.•Sensitizers induce significant IL-8 from oral epithelial model.•Significant IL-1α and IL-8 release from oral epithelial cells with 5–15 mg/ml SLS.•SLS was shown to induce de novo synthesis of IL-1α and IL-8 in oral mucosal model (OMM).
