Cytokine-induced sleep: Neurons respond to TNF with production of chemokines and increased expression of Homer1a in vitro.

•The response of neurons to TNF is limited to chemokines acting on microglia and macrophages.•Chemokines produced by TNF treated neurons does not comprise factors acting on resting lymphocytes.•TNF does not repress Homer1a expression in neurons in vitro.•Regulation of Homer1a expression by TNF in neuronal cultures differs from what is seen in vivo.
