•Projective tests are useful in predicting suicide risk.•The S-Con of Rorschach at a cut-off of 7 is highly predictive of near-lethal suicide.•Color-shading response is common in Rorschach records of suicidal individuals.•Projective tests are less researched in the context of suicide assessment.
