The effects of pH values, nutrients, and preserving temperature on akinete formation in Anabaena flos-aquae were examined at 30 ± 2°C exposed to fluorescent light at an intensity of 3000 lux. A marked effect of pH 6 and pH 7 on akinete formation was observed. At the third day, A. flos-aquae subjected to pH 6 and pH 7 developed the maximum frequency of akinetes. Saccharose and glucose are also important factors inducing akinete formation, with the frequency of 15% and 11%, respectively. Besides, lower temperature (4°C) makes a great contribution for the strain to possess the potential to form akinetes.
