Intergeneric hybridization between Dendranthema crassum and Ajania myriantha

Intergeneric cross has been made between Dendranthema crassum (2n=10x=90; ♀) and Ajania myriantha (2n=2x=18; ♂). Using ovule rescue, only one embryo germinated and produced the plantlet showing 2n=6x=54. Leaf length, petiole length, tubular florets number and epidermal hair density of the hybrid are intermediate between that of the parents. Leaf width and epidermal hair length of the hybrids are less than that of the parents. While ligulate florets number, flower diameter and epidermal hair height exceed that of the parents and showed transgressive inheritance. A genomic in situ hybridization approach was able to distinguish between the parental genomes of mitotic metaphase chromosomes in the unique hybrid plant.
