Study of scratch resistance of polypropylene compound for automobile

Scratch resistance is critical for plastic auto parts to maintain their new appearance. In this study, the effect of scratch-resistant additive content on the scratch resistance of talc-filled ethylene-α-olefin copolymer/polypropylene blends for auto interior parts was investigated by scratch morphology, scratch width, and change of lightness. The scratch tests were performed according to the GMW14688 and PV3952 standards. The compressive deformation region and broken region were introduced to evaluate the scratch damage. The effect of grained surface type on the scratch resistance was also examined. The results indicated that the addition of 1.5% scratch-resistant additive significantly improved scratch resistance. Scratch resistance was dependent on the depth, angle, and concentration of grains. Scratch resistance decreased with increasing depth, angle, and concentration of grains.
