Electrochemical preparation of Mg-Li-Y alloys by codeposition from LiCl-KCl-MgCl2-YCl3 Melts

This work presents an electrochemical preparation routine of Mg-Li-Y alloys by codeposition of Mg, Li, and Y on a molybdenum electrode in LiCl-KCl-MgCl2-YCl3 melts at 943 K. Cyclic voltammograms (CVs) showed that the under-potential deposition (UPD) of yttrium on pre-deposited magnesium leads to the formation of a liquid Mg-Y Solution. Chronopotentiometric measurements indicated that the codeposition of Mg. Li, and Y occurs at current density more negative -0.47 A cm(-2). Mg-Li-Y alloys with different lithium contents were obtained via galvanostatic electrolysis.
