•Calcination atmosphere has a big impact on the microstructure of Co/CNTs catalysts for FT reaction.•High calcination temperature results in the agglomeration of cobalt species and influences the FTS catalytic activity of Co/CNTs.•Plasma can replace calcination process to get high performance FT catalyst.
