Shielding performances of the designed hybrid laminates impacted by hypervelocity flyer

•HVI tests were performed using an electric gun and a laser velocity interferometer.•Hybrid laminates were designed to enhance the shielding performance against HVI.•Five-layered hybrid laminates can resist a flyer impact at a speed of 9.2km/s.•The damage of a target is correlated to its free surface velocity profile.
