Surface plasmon response of metal spherical nanoshells coated with dielectric overlayer

•SPR of metal spherical nanoshells coated with dielectric overlayer were investigated.•The effect of coating on the SPR linewidth is dependent on metal shell radius ratio.•Linewidth narrowing is expected for metal shell with strong coupling strength.•Q-factor and E field distribution is also dependent on the dielectric coating.
